At Iconlinx, and our sister company Iconbrands™, we seem to be besotted with the term 'Icon'. 'Be an icon in your economy' was our very first slogan, many years ago. Our latest Iconlinx program called 'Icon-in-training' will probably take the icon-concept even further.
What is the definition that people attach to the word icon? Did you know that the word icon comes to us from the Greek word eikenai, meaning "to seem or to be like." Icon can also describe a person closely linked to an idea. Mahatma Gandhi is revered as an icon of peace and humanity, while Adolf Hitler is reviled as an icon of violence and hatred.
When we started our 'be an icon in your economy' slogan, we did not have world domination in mind. We believe that you should strive to be the best you can be wherever you are. You could be a business ‘icon’ in your community, or in your town. You do not necessary have to be on the cover of Entrepreneur Magazine to be truly happy and to make a difference.
In the end, whether we want to admit it or not, we are all striving towards a healthy self-esteem and ultimately self-actualization. Knowing we have achieved what we have set out to achieve is one of the most self-sustaining, endorphin-filled feelings of self-worth.
In a personal capacity, you do not have to be Nelson Mandela to achieve that rush. In fact, you might be a 'no-body' in your town or even an outsider in your community, but you could be an icon in your family. Standing up for what you believe in, right there in the most intimate of social gatherings. Ensuring that people treat you with the respect that you deserve.
You could even just be an icon for yourself. Being proud of what you have achieved for yourself.
What change can we bring about in this world if we focus on getting 'that-icon-feeling' within ourselves?
